Architecture in Galicia

One of things we love about travelling to different autonomous communities (what Spain calls regions, similar to our states) is that the house styles change quite dramatically in each one and I love to photograph the houses and buildings as they often reflect the region in some way.

Many of the buildings in the towns and cities in Galicia have what they call “galerias” where the balconies are enclosed with windows. This protects them from Galicia’s cool winters, making the balconies usable all year round.

A Coruna, a city further to the north, has many of these buildings and is often referred to as the glass city. We have also seen quite a few here in Vilagarcia and in Pontevedra as well.

The older homes or fincas in Galicia are mostly built from the local granite or similar and in many of the front gardens you will find a “cruceiros” (stone crosses).
